Schools to UWE

Schools to Further and Higher Education serving North and North East of Bristol

Many schools are run by the fantastic Cabot Learning Federation and schools have reached new heights with Bristol Metropolitan Academy achieving the most improved school in the country for 2010 and in 2017 an academy higher in the tables than Bristol Cathedral School and Colston Girls; who would have envisioned that happening just ten years ago when education in Bristol had reached rock bottom in the UK and now in 2018/19 they continue to progress for our young people. visit:

This investment includes our local primary schools which have also became members of the Cabot Learning Federation and primary schools are being updated and some rebuilt in parts as well.
Minerva Primary Academy and Chester Park School are under development in 2018 while lots of other primaries have already been rebuilt and expanded including Staple Hill Primary and Begbrook Academy, Frome Vale Academy while May Park Primary School has had a complete redevelopment. St Josephs Primary School will expand and other primary schools have plans as well with Summer hill and a new school alongside Brunel Academy as well.  Please visit your local primary school website in the list below for developments.

Emersons Green has a recently constructed a £300m science park for Bristol and Bath after decades of planning which opened in 2011 and more is planned. The SGS College sites in Stoke Gifford and Filton with new developments along with City of Bristol College campuses such as Brunel and a new site in Bristol’s City Centre during the 2010s.

Filton College and Stroud College have come together to form South Gloucestershire and Stroud College Visit: and these have had a multi million pound re-development in recent years and there’s a healthy range of courses there, some in connection with Airbus, Rolls Royce and BAE Systems. Unfortunately Hillfields local college site in Soundwell belonging to City of Bristol College has closed but the site is planned for a new school.  Although it’s 25 miles from Bristol, Weston College has a fantastic brand and they are another progressive organisation with regional courses and new developments.

The University of the West of England (UWE) is developing a new super campus following an investment of £40m they purchased 70 acres of land from Hewlett Packard Labs as part of a £300m plan to expand the Frenchay UWE site, making it twice the size. A new £50 Million Business and Law Faculty opened in 2017 and a new Engineering Faculty will open in 2020.  This follows other recent investments i.e. a new Faculty of Education building in 2001 following the closure of an old campus in Redland, a new Faculty of Built Environment in 2002, upgrade work to the Faculty of Technology and Engineering in 2002 and a new student village which opened in recent years with another opening in 2017.  The new site also came with a conference and exhibition centre for Bristol.  UWE expansion meant that St Matthias Campus in the heart of Fishponds had to be sold to cover new investment in Frenchay but this has brought Avanti Gardens School and much needed housing. Thankfully Glenside Campus  will stay part of UWE, their beautiful historic site for health at Glenside Campus is seeing various updates as well with a new student experience in and dining facilities.
Glenside Campus

There are countless professional courses in the region as well and we’ll add these to this website as and when we discover them.

Welcome to Avanti Gardens, a two-form entry community school based in Fishponds, Bristol. Our school opened in September 2014 and recently joined the Avanti Schools Trust. It is through our holistic, inclusive and caring approach that we support our children to flourish, to reach their academic and social potential and move along their journey of self-discovery.

Our mission is to equip children with a love of life-long learning, by focusing on our core values.   Visit:

Fairfield High School in Lockleaze Ward.
Our school is outstanding in the opportunities it provides across the curriculum.
We believe strongly in the importance of reading and have several programmes to encourage a love of the written word. Drop Everything and Read sessions take place during Tutor Time to allow students (and teachers) to enjoy reading for pleasure and see its value in their lives. We also take part in the Accelerated Reader scheme, which involves a computer record of library books. A number of students have become “millionaires” after reading a million words in this programme.
Students can broaden their experience through trips abroad, as well as through the school’s partnerships with media and creative industries within Bristol including Watershed. FHS works closely with Bristol University and UWE to offer enrichment and development opportunities for students of all abilities and talents.
