There are coffee mornings, youth groups, lunch clubs, wife’s clubs, football teams, badminton clubs, faith societies or come along to evening or morning services. You do not have to be religious to attend groups, but you will meet people who will care for you as much as anybody else in life! Bristol was one of the principal Jewish centres of medieval England.

Jews accompanied William the Conqueror – the Norman Conquest – and first came to Bristol in the reign of his son, William Rufus, settling in the area of Nelson Street and Quay Street on the banks of the River Frome. The first Synagogue was in the crypt of what was St Giles Church in Small Street. The cemetery was on what is now the site of Queen Elizabeth’s Grammar School, where artefacts with Hebrew script were found when the school’s foundations were being dug.

Quakers in Frenchay. Friends Meeting House, Beckspool Road, Frenchay BS16 1NT &

Quakers do not share a fixed set of beliefs. Our unity is based on shared understanding and a shared practice of worship, not on our beliefs all being the same. There is no need to be in unity with Quakers on every issue in order to be part of our meetings.
There is a great diversity within the Quakers on conceptions of God, and we use different kinds of language to describe religious experience. Some Quakers have a conception of God which is similar to that of orthodox Christians, and would use similar language. Others are happy to use God-centred language, but would conceive of God in very different terms to the traditional Christian trinity. Some describe themselves as agnostics, or humanists, or non-theists and describe their experiences in ways that avoid the use of the word God entirely. Quaker faith is built on experience and Quakers would generally hold that it is the spiritual experience which is central to Quaker worship, and not the use of a particular form of words (whether that be “God” or anything else).

One of the best facilities for elderly and disadvantaged people in Greater Fishponds is Brunelcare at Colliers Gardens where people from our community are always put first and the building is wonderful, accessible and affordable to all day care centre users.

Mainly for the over 55s, Brunelcare in Fishponds has a wonderful lounge and restaurant area where people can relax and socialise, meet friends and make new friends while hot drinks start from low prices and main meals the same or less. Call the restaurant for full details on 0117 958 9072 or email:
